Project Co-founded by the European Union under the Creative Europe programme.

IronNotes is a European network and series of events that brings together experts, makers, students, and wider audiences around the unifying topic of metal. Focusing on blacksmithing and metalworking, this network includes participants from Estonia, Finland, Italy, Norway, and Sweden. Over the project period (2025–2027), IronNotes aims to raise awareness of blacksmithing’s history and its role in modern society, fostering regional and international cooperation.

Supported by Creative Europe funding, Campus Steneby in Sweden explores future opportunities for blacksmiths, particularly in creating grave markers for local cemeteries. These markers are durable, unique works of art that support local economies and preserve regional traditions, countering the marginalization caused by global industry. The project includes a conference in October 2025 and a competition inviting innovative concepts for blacksmith-made grave markers.

Call for Proposals

We invite concept proposals for innovative grave markers that integrate the craftsmanship of local blacksmiths with contemporary challenges. Selected proposals will receive funding and mentorship to develop and realize their concepts. The outcomes will be documented, published, and exhibited.

Conference

From October 9th to 12th, 2025, Campus Steneby will host a conference dedicated to discussing sustainable, innovative, and meaningful grave markers crafted by local blacksmiths. The conference will feature workshops, craft skill demonstrations, debates, and talks. This event is a unique opportunity to advance the craft of blacksmithing and foster its momentum.

Documentation

The entire research project will be well documented. This comprehensive documentation will include recordings and transcripts of all talks, detailed summaries of workshop results, descriptions of innovative approaches, and the concepts developed during the project. Additionally, the outcomes of the grave marker competition will be showcased. All these materials will be made publicly accessible, providing valuable resources for further research, education, and practical application.
